Bicycle transportation
Introduction
Bicycle transportation represents an irreplaceable part of the city transportation system. Using bicycles for short distances in the city is often the fastest, shortest and most flexible transportation alternative.
That is why we perceive bicycle transportation as a necessary and suitably amending part of the city public transportation system.
Data utilization
Based on the data related to the movement of cyclists, appropriate infrastructure modifications can be recommended. They include construction of bicycle stands and bicycle lanes and creation of reasonable rules for bicycle-sharing operators.

Bicycle counters
Bicycle counters provide a useful real-time data about the bicycle paths occupancy. This means an indirect support of cycling in the city and it's used as one of the ways to track the Conception of bicycle transportation and recreational cycling development in Prague. It is also used as a supportive tool for other iniciatives related to cycling development and it's infrastructure in Prague.
Functions:
Occupancy monitoring is performed using bicycle counters placed on the main cycling paths in Prague. The cyclist rides are tracked directly in the measurement points including the direction of the rides. The data also monitors the current temperature and is collected in real time (5 minute intervals) into Prague's data platform Golemio. The data does not show us the logic of the cyclists’ routes and their destinations, however, it represents a good source for extrapolating the total number of cyclists throughout the entire city.
Benefits for Prague citizens:
- The information about the current cycling path occupancy is available to citizens.
- Financing of cycling infrastructure development and support of bicycle transportation is more effective.
- Connections with other projects - for example building a sensor net monitoring air quality or projects for tracking occupation of other transportation types.

Historical data about number of cyclist rides through points with bicycle counters. Color differentiation of weekends and working days.
Application Na kole Prahou
This application, introduced by the Prague City Hall, navigates cyclists and recommends them suitable routes from their respective starting points to their destinations. Data from this application can be analyzed and the most common start and destination locations determined. Similarly, the data can show individual areas and streets, through which the cyclists pass.
The input for processing data-analytical outputs is data about recorded rides from the mobile application Na kole Prahou for the period from 1st Jan 2017 to 31st Dec 2018. The processing includes rides which took place at least partly in the area of interest of Prague and neighborhood, defined by coordinates: min latitude=49.816, min longitude=14.005, max latitude=50.307 and max longitude=14.907. The processed rides were also longer then 700m and the average speed was less then 30km/h.
Cyclist rides in the street network
The visualization reflects number of cyclist rides through individual segments of Prague roads and bicycle paths network for 2017 and 2018. It is possible to filter data from 2018 to working and non-working days. It is also possible to display both real number of rides for period of interest and estimated daily number of rides calculated using a combination of recorded data and data from bicycle counters. The open data from 2017 is divided into hours and data from 2018 into time intervals (0:00-7:00, 7:00-10:00, 10:00-16:00, 16:00-20:00 a 20:00-23:59).

Matrices of beginnings and ends of rides
Matrices of beginnings and ends of rides made in Prague in 2018. They contain data about 70 375 rides. Other rides ended or lead outside of the area of Prague.

Mobile application data
Mobile application represent a very accurate data source on the movement of the cyclists. They include sports or navigation applications, or even applications of bicycle-sharing companies.

Data za 2017 jsou s agregací na hodinové úseky, data za 2018 jsou s agregací na jednotlivé časové intervaly dne (0:00-7:00, 7:00-10:00, 10:00-16:00, 16:00-20:00 a 20:00-23:59). TSK operates bicycle counters that count the number of passages of the cyclists in the given direction utilizing induction loops installed in the bicycle paths.
