Street parking
Introduction
The purpose of the introduction of the paid parking zones (PPZ) in Prague was to regulate parking and to ensure that the residents of busy localities can park their vehicles within a walking distance from their homes, properties or businesses. The system is also supposed to motivate visitors to make their car visits at the give locations as short as possible, thus making parking room for other drivers as well. The zones are divided into following 3 basic categories depending on their use:
- residential mode (blue zone) - designated for residents, subscribers and property owners at the give area
- mixed mode (purple zone) - designated for parking of residents, subscribers and property owners, as well as visitors
- visiting mode (orange zone) - designated for short-term parking of anybody
Pursuant to Act No. 13/1997 Coll., on Roadways, PPZ are established by the Capital of Prague. Parking fees can be paid at the automatic parking machines (parking meters) located on the streets along the paid parking zones, or via the virtual parking meter (VPM) web application . Parking persons are identified based on the vehicle license plates. Parking authorizations are monitored automatically using a monitoring system.
Available data
The original records on paid parking of non-residential vehicles from all types of the established paid parking zones are available in the form of open data in the CSV format from January 1st, 2017 until today. No records on residential vehicles that are permitted to park anywhere within the given blue zones of their respective municipal districts exist. Data about paid parking of non-residential vehicles are collected from the actual parking meters and, at the same time, from VPM. Detailed information about individual payment transactions for parking are collected simultaneously and both of the input data sources are merged into a single dataset and saved in the same data structure with an identical record format. In order to differentiate between the used purchasing technologies, the CSV dataset includes information about one or the other collection technology (parking meter or VPM). The data can thus be used for, for example, comparing the popularity of the purchasing technologies.
The data are organized in the following structure:
- transaction ID,
- date and time of purchasing the parking coupon
- date and time of the parking commencement/activation,
- date and time of the end of the parking,
- parking zone ID,
- parking fee,
- used payment technology (parking meter or VPM).
Locations of the paid parking zones, operation time, tariff
The interactive map shows a basic layout of the paid parking zones in Prague, which are further divided into the so-called parking sections. Individual sections are marked with their own ID and numeric codes of the PPZ, into which they belong (such as P1-0365). The color coding of individual sections, respectively of the entire PPZ, corresponds to the current modes of the residential, mixed and visiting modes. That is why they are marked correspondingly - blue, purple and orange.
When you place the cursor over an individual parking section, information about the operation times of the given PPZ, to which it belongs, and about the corresponding parking price per hour is displayed. To make things even clearer, the PPZ areas and locations of individual parking meters are also displayed here. Individual parking meters are represented green points on the map.
Average parking time
Based on the collected parking data of non-residential vehicles, an analysis of an average parking time of a single vehicle for each PPZ has been prepared. The displayed spatial analysis in the map shows statistical data about the average times of uninterrupted parking in a particular zone per one non-residential vehicle. The used historical data, based on which the calculations were made, fall within the following time period: 1.1.2017 - 5.11.2018. The color scale shows the minimal and maximal values of the average parking times and defines the interval of the represented values in between them.
Upon placing the cursor over it, the given parking section shows the average parking time of non-residential vehicles.
Average numbers of the parking vehicles.
The average numbers of the parking non-residential vehicles can be seen in the following two visualizations. The graphs calculate statistical values of the occupancy parameter always from the data that correspond to the selected time interval.
Average occupancy of the selected PPZ by non-residential vehicles during 24 hours of a typical day
The histogram shows the average numbers of the parking non-residential vehicles for each started 15 minutes during a selected typical day of the week at a selected parking zone and for a selected time period. It shows the characteristics of the parameter over 24 hours and always aggregates the result for the selected period for individual typical days (Monday, Tuesday, etc.)
Parking revenues for individual municipal districts
The following diagram shows the total annual revenues (in millions of CZK) obtained from the parking of non-residential vehicles at the given paid parking zones for individual municipal districts and mutually compares them. 2017 data for some of the PPZ are not available. That is why there are no values displayed for some municipal district for that year.
The diagram displays the total revenues for parking purchased via the parking meters or the application (VPM) for individual municipal districts for 2017 (provided the data exist) and 2018. When you click on the map of the municipal districts, the column with statistical values for the selected municipal district gets highlighted.
