Introduction

Benches

Prague has installed smart benches on its streets as a part of the pilot testing program. People can use the benches for charging their phones using two USB ports or they can take advantage of the Wi-Fi connection. As a part of the trial period, Prague has, in a relatively small extent, tested various bench types from several manufacturers. That is why we can see benches on the streets from a total of eight suppliers. It is one of the complementary projects of the Smart Prague concept. Moreover, the benches are energy self-sufficient since they have a built-in solar panel. 95% of the produced energy is directly consumed by the people who use the given smart devices. The ICT Operator also collects usage data from the installed benches. The following two data sets show the bench data that were monitored - for example, air pressure, humidity and temperature, and noise level. For example, you will learn how long mobile phones were charging on average and how many users connected to the Internet.

The presented data have been and are collected as a part of a pilot project, objective of which is to test various technologies. These data do not come from certified sensors. This fact has to be taken into consideration when interpreting the data.

Data utilization

The data from this pilot project can be used, for example, for creating applications that display meteorological data.

Recommendation on behalf of the data area

Based on the experience gained from the pilot project, we found out that the suppliers of the street furniture provide data via API in various structures, without specifying the used sensors, installation heights, etc. That is why an API specification for the street furniture was proposed. This proposal is based on the best practice principle, acquired from this pilot project Here is an example of the specification.zde.

The benches do not provide important information data sources and that is why it is not necessary to require the suppliers to provide a possibility to download the history of the monitored quantities when the given interface is not available. The recorded data unavailability was primarily caused by the lack of energy obtained from the installed solar panels, bench damages or interface changes. It is better to solve the data availability by determining SLA at a certain service level than to subsequently download and import the data from individual benches manually when the given interface is not available.

J. z Poděbrad, Modřany a Vítězné nám.
